Liverpool Pals Dispatch Rider
Erroneously titled but I can't edit that....
Attached is a card showing 17919 Charles Ward Perry of the 19th battalion KLR which I picked up the other week. I didn't notice till I physically had hold of it that he is wearing the battalion specific Messengers wings as shown in The Badges of Kitcheners Army by David Bilton. Mr Bilton states it is a half wing worn on the upper right arm - my card is slightly clearer than the image he had to make reference to and shows that they are full wings worn on both upper arms in this instance. Very happy with the card as its the first time I've seen the wings and I have several hundred Pals cards, so probably the only one I'll see. As a note Perry was KIA in 1918. |

I don’t know about Despatch Rider ( don’t have a copy of the book referred to) but I have had this photo for many years.
Unfortunately I cannot remember what explanation I was given as to what the wings were for. P.

Hi Peter
That is the same image from the book - I put Dispatch then couldn't change the title as its messenger/runner in the book. Bilton states "Runners wore a half-wing on the upper right arm, the details of which are unclear". I guess its correct as we have your image and mine, both 19th men. Mr Bilton seems to have used extensive research so it came from somewhere, but his book is the only reference, other than our 2 pictures, I've seen of it. Also thanks Jon for the rotation Regards Gary |

Thanks,
I am annoyed with myself as I remember the badge being positively identified but can’t remember as what. The picture I posted is just a copy of a photo, I have never owned the original. P.

Many thanks for all the input, somewhere at the back of my mind the description “Messenger “ rings a bell.

It's such a large badge, and if I may be so bold, a little un-Army like, if you see what I mean?
Fascinating to find out what exactly it is. Cheers Chris |
