I noticed that the box and slip that is the subject of this thread is back on ebay.

Cheers

That tells you something when suddenly there's no returns. The previous buyer had a lucky escape.

water under the bridge, but the statement " i have been collecting 20 years and own many many condolence slips " is problematical. the trouble with this collecting lark is that questionable stuff goes into the black hole of a collection and when it emerges many moons later onto the market the owner is left with a black hole in their wallet. enough of particle physics.

Fascinating thread, I’ve checked my collection and thankfully they’re okay. When you compare the images side by side the anomalies are very clear.
I’m not sure I’d read too much into ‘no returns’ I always list with that as I’m sick of idiots who bid then read the description and study the photos afterwards!
Cheers

What beats me is the motivation of the faker. Forgery is only profitable if it can be scaled up [as in the old £1 coins] or the item sells for a lot of £££ [as in an impressionist painting]. But the subject of this thread fits into neither category. He cleared perhaps £200 after costs. He can't pull the same stunt again for a long time to come, or he'll blow his cover. To research, fake up and age a piece of paper like this must take hours. And, setting up a print run for only a few documents can't be cheap. I reckon since there's no monetary profit in this kind of fakery, it must be done for some kind of dark psychological motive... any other rational explanation?

I imagine its pure money/greed that drives the fakers. There's nothing to say the last seller was the faker of course, from earlier posts it sounds like these have been in circulation for many years. Long before forums and the internet perhaps when it must have been much easier for them to cover their tracks.

This thread has been very informative thank you, it never ceases to amaze me how low some folks will stoop ... may they get their full comeuppance.

If you work for a printing company then it wouldn't cost you a penny to knock off a thousand as a homer, you just need to find the right paper.

Sorry for the late reply to everyone, I've returned the slip to the seller and hold my hands up that I got it wrong, it's enough to put you off the hobby! But I will carry on collecting and all of the advice was appreciated thank you everyone for your posts.

We are lucky to have such expertise on this Forum, coupled with a will to 'watch each other's backs'. 'United we Conquer'.
