Never seen it before.

Construction and colour looks Canadian.

Sign next to it says Mortar? Not a British badge I dont think.

It doesn’t look British Army to me either. I agree that Canadian seems the more likely.

Nothing in the records for such a badge in the Canadian army.

It does not appear in he Bennet book and I would not agree that the construction suggests Canadian production. I would say that the consruction suggests earlier rather than later production but not WW1.

I don't know if Grumpy has any comments. I have probaly owned it for 30 years.

To assist us please can you show a photo of the rear and then zoom out so we can see the labels around it that would seem to give an ID

regards

It is very similar to the New Zealand Machine gun proficiency badge circa 1907 to 1917, but have not seen one with a crown before.

M proficiency badge ‘NZ Regulation No. 601 of December 1907’. —.jpg

Perhaps it is similar to the system Canada brought in :

The badges also showed progression within a trade, and were divided into groups (the highest level was Group 4, but there were certain trades that only had 1, 2 or 3 groups in total also).

Group 1 - A basic badge was worn
Group 2 - A laurel wreath was worn below the badge
Group 3 - A crown was worn above the badge
Group 4 - Both laurel wreath and crown were worn.

Two more views of this badge which I forgot to post when I originally posted this thread. Any more comments on its identity?
