Default A Good Badge Day

Arrived today, some real beauties amongst these.

An 1863 HM Silver Tower Hamlets Rifles Glengarry badge, 5th W.Yorks Militia Shako Plate, Outstanding Clan badge to the Clan MacPhail in solid silver, top quality WBC to the 74th Highlanders just needs a gentle clean and more.

The only one that I am scratching my head with is the Para badge. It appears plated? Is that right. It would be odd to have a duffer in amongst this Lot. I will be selling it.

regards

Well done Simon. I was the underbidder on the lot with the 1st V.B. RWK. A good spot.

Sorry missed the question at the end. The Para badge is fine. Both voided and solid crown KC Paras are found plated.

Mike,

There are no hallmarks, so its hard to tell.
Its appearance is of a quality silver piece but I would only ever to be able to describe it as silver/silver plate in the absence of marks.

Its the first I have had, very large, larger than I expected. What date would you put it at?

regards

A superb lot. The horn badge on top left is mouth watering! What is it?
Not to bemoan my situation, but I have had no badge purchases this year, and last years finds were few and far between to say the least.
The postage costs, inflation, Royal Mail mess etc., have virtually put me out.
I used to occasion some good finds from ebay over here in years past, but there is NOTHING now, nor has there been for some time. Endless listings of junk or the most common of badges. I no longer even bother to look.

Date wise im not sure. There is a damaged one shown on "Steves Uniform Pages" . The crossbelt shown with it is from 1880 to 1900 approx,i doubt they are from the same time . My thinking is the other end of the 1800s .
I have an unmarked one at home . They do exist in HM silver.

I have been trying for years to investigate the mystery of bugle badges, worn by very many Rifle Volunteers right around the empire and no doubt ordered as a generic pattern from badge makers who may well have supplied the exact badge to another regiment or two. There are different sizes, slung bugles and coiled bugles, with and without crowns, numbers or cyphers in the centre, etc etc.
Attached a scan of a stgsil badge which would help to date this particular one.
Also a crowned slung bugle worn in Tas and South Aust before 1901.

Wilf should be able to pin down the date of this photo accurately - Sir C. E. Howard Vincent's sabretache (Queen's Westminsters) which I believe to have been photographed 1890s(?):

I cant make the date letter out properly but the anchor sideways is 1860 to 1900.
If so i stand corrected on my previous statement about the date.

The photo dates from 1896 JT, I've been looking for one of these for years as I have the sabretache which belonged to Lt Col Shoolbred and it is sadly missing its Bugle!! The marks left in the leather measure 65mm wide x 60mm tall and it had 3 screw posts to the rear. I'd be interested to know the dimentions of yours Simon. Also, if anyone had one for sale I'd be very interested!!
