Default LRDG pics, supplied to me by the Author......Cheers

Not sure if this is the right place for these ,but here we are, never the less.
These pics have been supplied to me by the Author of 'The Kiwi Scorpions' ,Brendan O'Carroll, an invaluable reference work on this unit & a very good friend for more than 30 years now & posted with his , recently granted, kind permission.( From my file of 'special' pics. ) All items are origionals & supplied by ex-members of this very unique unit. For those who do not have a copy of this book ,there is rumour of a re-print in the offing ,as origional copies are now fetching large amounts of cash !
Enjoy !

1. 2 patterns of the standard badge. There are a few more varieties ,but all are similar to these.
2. Back of same
3. NZ LRP (Long range patrol) LRDG . (The origional badge, issued to Kiwis who formed the origional & majority of troopers at that time , with later additions from other countries, including a British Guards unit.) An extremely rare item !!
4. Back of same, found with Egyptian silver marks on the back also.

Cheers !
Steve (NZ)

And Bosleys (forthcoming auction 30/01/08, lot 91 ) have a pin back silver version of the standard pattern,..... allegedly from the Hugh King collection: description......... "Long Range Desert Group rare WW2 silver cap badge. A very fine die-cast example, the flat reverse impressed "Silver". Original silver brooch pin bearing Egyptian silver marks "

estimate??? £300-£500

if any rich forum user buys it don't forget about us lot here and add some photos (front and back please) !!!!

Post An LRDG aquisition

Just thought this may be of interest. Bought it on ebay for the pricely sum of £10. It's a 25 pounder shell case with a nice selection of badges on it. Among them an LRDG one. At that price, originality wasn't a big issue for me, biut the seller sent me details of a relative who was a Rhodesian, and had actually served with the LRDG. He had died in 1980, maybe I'm being very naive, but to me, that would be before the market was swamped with restrikes. I want to believe it is original, and as al the lugs are broken off, I guess value is greatly diminished, but I think it's a good find. I've no intention of selling it, as my ex wife hates it.
Having difficuly downloading the photo. Will endeavour to sort it out.

F-A-B,
looking good, but a little hard to see very clearly?
It would appear to be in good company here also & therefore likely a totally genuine item, so is a great buy, indeed !
Not too sure of the latest price here, but worth a great deal more than paid ,for sure !
Tell that to the ex-wife !
Is a close-up available, just to be able to verify a little more here ?
I think that it being a 25pndr shell also lends creadence ?

Cheers !
Steve

hi all
sorry to the one to mention this, but was chating with a friend from england the other day who mentioned the latest trick in the restrikers armoury. given the big prices for trench art these days on ebay, $100s per item in some cases and the decreasing prices of the restrikes, the fakers are puting restrikes onto old shell cases and pasing them off as genuine.
now im no expert on british badges but i would now suspect any piece of trench art without provinance

I don't like to be a damp blanket but the badge below appears to have a post 1953 Queen's crown? Not quite contempory and would suggets a later put-together piece.

however having blown up the picture it appears to be a Rhodeian badge so that ties in with the story.

Alan

F-A-B,
sorry ,but have to agree with these guys, here, now.
My work comp. with bigger & clearer screen, shows it to be a dud here.
(need to replace that old Home comp. screen ,obviously !)
And as Alan says, the QC badge below ,throws out the dating, for a start !
Sorry ,mate !
Cheers (I think?) !

Sorry its a fake, because the scorpians legs are not in the correct position as seen on original badges.

Default Mystery shell case

Points all taken aboard re possible fakes etc, however, a couple had dropped off and I could verify that they were real. I've never yet seen anyone bother to restrike an officer's solid silver collar dog! I know there's a couple of more recent Rhodesian items on it, but the original owner lived there until the late 1970's. At the end of the day, I only paid a tenner for it (ok and a bit more for postage), but I'm very fond of it.
Having found the original letter from the seller, the owners name was Hugh Sutherns. If anyone has access to LRDG records, that could be used to check it out.
Here's a few more photos now that I've mastered the fine art of resizing my pictures!
John

Wink Closer view

This is the best close up I could get of it I'm afraid. I've never been one for collecting special forces stuff, mainly due to the number of fakes out there, but as I didn't know it was even on the shell case when I bought it, I've no grounds to complain. Thank you for all your opinions and thoughts though. Greatly appreciated. That's the benefit of sites like this.
