Default Northumberland Hussars Q/C

Hi Guys,

Can anyone tell me when this badge was worn? 1960s? 1970s?

Mick

Oops - Posted in wrong section. Can a mod please move this to the UK Cavalry section?

Mick,
I'm not sure it was worn at all - in brass.
The earlier KC pattern was produced in brass and white metal, but this QC pattern, as far as I know, was only produced in white metal - even Gaunt's themselves restruck it in white metal in the seventies long after the regiment had been issued QC silver anodised badges.
If it is original, however, it would have been worn alongside the white metal version, so that puts it between 1956 and 1962 or later - depending on when the anodised badges were actually issued for wear.
STM.
PS: There is also, apparently, a KC anodised badge, but I have never seen one.

K&K list only w/m and a/a silver versions of the Q/C cap badge. The lugs would be unusual for a cap badge of that era; I would expect a slider on that badge. It does seem well made though and has a crispness of detail lacking on most copies.

Didnt they wear an arm badge that was the same as the cap badge, that probaly was on lugs rather than a slider.

I have 2 versions of this badge - one with lugs and one with a slider with " J R GAUNT B'HAM" on the back.

Here's the pictures of the back of both badges.

I think the one with the Gaunt slider is the seventies badge made by them for the collectors market.
Looking at the both of them from the back, I would say both were copies, I'm afraid.
The only arm badge I am aware of for the NHY is the one pictured below.
I have yet to find a reference book on the subject of Yeomanry NCO arm badges, so I could be mistaken.

Like STM I have never seen a book on Yeomanry NCO`s arm badge but there was an article on them in the MHS Bulletin of February 1960.

As said the Northumberland Hussars had the keep of the castle of Newcastle upon Tyne with South Africa 1900-02 below

Mick,

There is certainly an a/a version with the Q/C. I am not sure that there ever was an 'original' version in white metal.

Alan, Mick
In K&K it says that there was a white metal version, which was sealed on 19th September 1956.
The seal date for the anodised badge is 13th March 1962, so this would make the white metal badge very scarce on todays market.
I have only ever seen the Gaunt marked one like Mick has shown and have always avoided them.
Could this mark be genuine, or is it the mark of the 70's repro's for definate ?
Is it possible that the original badge in '56 had a marked slider with this Gaunt font ?
I will continue to avoid them until the evidence shows otherwise, I think.

PB,
thank's for showing the bulliten, I value any and all info on Yeomanry NCO arm badges and have always found it very frustrating as there is little or no information available.
STM.

Stayed in the hotel right next to the Newcastle Castle Keep this weekend for a family wedding. Unfortunately the Keep is part clad in scaffold at the moment for a face lift, but took a few snaps anyway (below) nice damp misty Sunday morning on the banks of the Tyne.

Anyway, my point, a few think the castle on the badge is Alnwick Castle (including Bosley's) but its not - as stated by PB it's the Castle Keep of Newcastle.

The White metal QC slidered version I have is the same as Micks:

never really felt comfortable about it, guess you just confirmed my gut feeling.

If I was to find an identical badge that had the large font JR Gaunt London on it then I would be happy. Lugs, a blank slider or the BHam just does not do it for me for a 1956 badge and I would replace them asap.

What about large font JR GAUNT LONDON LTD ?
The reason I ask is that I have a couple of QC 8H bi-metal badges with this on and to be honest, I just put them in with the Birmingham ones as copies.
Is it only the B'HAM 'branch' that are suspect ?
STM.
