Help, etc.
May I reinforce 54Bty's identification - Hertfordshire Yeomanry. Believe it or not, the most common sighting of this device is on the helmet plate, which seems to surface more often than smaller badges of the same unit. I suspect this one dates from the early part of the 20th century. Regards. David

Herts Yeomanry ?
I have just checked in John Sainsbury's oracle: The Hertfordshire Yeomanry. An illustrated history 1794-1920.
On page 58 it shows a line drawing of a very similar badge which John records as having been first made in 1852 for use on the South Hertfordshire Yeomanry cavalry's black lacquered heelmet and later incorporated in the helmet plate for the white metal dragoon helmet. Made in white metal- actual size 2 3/8" x 2 3/4". He doesn't mention the fitings though. The design is substantially different to that worn by the officer's Imperial Yeomanry from 1901 and the OR's badge in respect of he ground and reeds of the ford. Beware of the helmet plates though, they have been extensiveley re-struck. Regards, Stephen. |

Herts badge
This badge was also worn by the 1st Herts R.V. on a blackened brass star by other ranks which may account for being fairly common.
