Montgomeryshire YC Guidons & WW1 Colours (found)
Hi All
A very interesting and excellent find in Welshpool. What appear to be the Royal Standard and the Squadron Guidons of the MYC and the later Colours given to the Yeomanry for WW1 memorial. And in very good condition considering they have been layed up for over 100 years.

I think that I may be missing something here. Have the Colours recently been taken out of storage and hung above the memorial?

....the Church , where they were layed up, is now a private residence. Their whereabouts has been a bit of a mystery to the RWF Museum and they have recently been discovered again. The hunt has been for whereabouts of the colours of the WW1 TF/Yeomanry Colours of WW1. We are still trying to find the 24th Btns. Each Yeomanry would have been given their own Btns Colours to lay up.... so there will be two or three colours per battalion depending of the number of Regiments contained therein.
The hunt continues.

....in Welshpool and no its not available to the public as the church is now a private residence (a sign of the times sadly). BUT, full respect is given to the memorial and its looked after, the Guidons and Standards are untouched.

So many churches have been sold off in recent years and therefore public access to their memorials has been lost. In most cases if you have a legitimate
interest in a particular memorial owners will allow access with prior consent. The church in Presteigne is still open, or it was the last time we visted. It has the colours of the Radnorshire Rifle Volunteers. |
