Default 19th County of London (St Pancras)

Picked up this badge fairly recently, and noticed that the Roman numerals in the centre of the badge have (for want of a better phrase) a 'chiseled' line along their centres. I have only ever seen one other example of this, which was posted on the forum by Alan O. All other St. Pancras badges I've seen have had 'solid' numerals.

Would this be reasonably unusual, or have I just not seen enough examples?

With thanks,

Peter.

These are my 3 - excuse the camera flash.

1899-02 in blackened brass
1899-02 in brass
1900-02 in brass.

The 1900-02 is by FN Bh'am. The other 2 are unmarked.

Thanks Alan... picture #3 is the type I'm referring to. You can just about make out the 'grooves' along the numerals. I have never seen another, though I am sure saying so is tempting fate!

Thanks for posting it.

Lovely badge Peter,
If you ever want to find a new home for it !!!!! Seriously though, it's a cracker, my brass & w/m ones are solid as you said but my blackened brass one shows signs of the chiselled look , but mostly polished away ! Hope this helps, all the best,
Wilf.
P.S Alans look nice too, good selection.

Hi chaps,
Here are mine for comparison. There seems to be considerable variation in these badges.
cheers, Tinto

Gentlemen,

Many thanks one and all, for posting such lovely examples for comparison.

I must say, Wilf (as I was only just remarking to Charlie585) how well the dark green field lends itself to the presentation of badges.

Many thanks once again.

Tinto,

Would I be right in saying all those you posted here are 1900-02? Can't quite make the dates out clearly.

Peter.

Hi Peter,
Yes, all mine are 1900-1902.
A tip, you can save the image onto your own computer and enlarge further there.
Cheers, Tinto

Thanks for the tip, mate.

Do any of those have makers' marks, at all?

None have maker's marks but the third from right might have had one once. Here are the reverse shots.

The crown is markedly different on the badge with the broken slider too; not so pointy on either side.

Yes, you're right. It looks somewhat similar to your one in the first post. The "chisel marks" are there.

Stands to reason that there could quite possibly have been a maker's mark on that lost slider then.

WE'LL NEVER KNOW [sob...sniff...]

Cheers Tinto.

Not to worry. Others on the forum have pointed out that breaks often occur at the crimp line at the top of those sliders.
Cheers, Tinto
