Default Guards Machine Gun Battalion-OSD Cap Badge

Whilst everyone was jumping with joy the other day about which items were going to sell at Bosleys with an outrageous amount of commission heaped on top! I was watching this little Gem on ebay..... And now it's mine and no commission to pay either! The seller even sent it via Special Delivery FOC!

I've never even seen one before so they are quite rare! A Silver (unmarked) Guards Machine Gun Battalion Officers Service Dress Cap badge. Probably private purchase, it bears the makers/suppliers stamp "F SMITH LONDON"?

Measuring 30 x 30mm it is a tiny Work of Art, with Blue/Red enamelling to the rear of the fretted lettering! It will be added to the Album in due course!

Andy

I have on the past sold photographs of other ranks of this unit wearing crossed machine gun collar dogs, what did officers wear on their collars?

Hi Andy,

Paul,
both badges belonged to the same owner so they will have to stay together I'm affraid!

As to JJs question, Guards Officers do not have collar badges, apart from Tunic Order that is!

Hi Andy,
Good that they are staying together and have gone to a good owner.

I think the maker is E Smith, London (I once had a Coldstreams officer's puggaree badge made by them).

An interesting reply Andy, thank you for that. The reason why I ask is because in the Mike Chappell book The Guards Divisions 1914-45, Page 26 there is a photograph of the second pattern badge being worn during a 1919 victory parade and although it is blurred the officer is wearing a collar badge?

This link may or may not work for you:

JJ,
not 100% convinced that it is a collar rather than a blemish on the image? He is a Coldstreamer (buttons in pairs on cuff) although he appears to wear a GMGR Cap badge. If he were wearing collars I would have thought that they would have been gilt or silvered (as per whatever MGC wore) and would have shown up as clearly as those worn by the ORs?

If you look at the edge of the sword blade there appears to be another blemish on the other side. This picture has remained a mystery to me for some time.

JJ,
I don't think they are collars? IMO they would be far more obvious and central than two blemishes on the collar edges?
