Awesome badges.
Photographed this lot in a display case in the Scone Shop at Sheffield, Tasmania, about 15 years ago. They were gone when I went back a couple of years later. Keith |

Jordan Shield Annual Shoot 1914
Hi,
I purchased this item last year and believe it to be wonderful piece of history relating to Senior Cadet, J. Carroll, 72nd Battalion (Western Districts Regiment), Victoria. After a little research on the internet I discovered the following information about it. Although not badge related I thought forum members might like to see it. Cheers, Invest RIFLE COMPETITION Two teams of 8 cadets each, one from each company, will leave Colac for Warrnambool on Friday night to compete for the Jordan Shield. The match will be fired on Saturday morning, and the teams will be able to return to Colac by the afternoon’s train. Cadets are allowed to travel at one-third the ordinary fare. Teams from Beeac, Cobden, Camperdown, Terang, Warrnambool, Koroit, Hamilton and Casterton are also competing, and it is expected that keen competition will be the result. Colac Reformer Thursday 14 May 1914 Page 2 MILITARY COMPETITIONS The annual shoot for the Jordan Shield by teams drawn from the 72nd Battalion of Senior Cadets took place at the Warrnambool Range on Saturday, when teams from Warrnambool, Koroit, Camperdown and Colac keenly contested the event. There were eight men in each team, and the conditions were seven shots, with two sighters, at 300 and 400 yards. The weather was fine although a continually altering light caused indifferent scoring in some cases. The shield went to "H" Company, Koroit, who scored 357 points - a popular win. "G" Company Warrnambool, were second with 302 points and "F" Company, Warrnambool, came third with a total of 298. Each member of the winning team will receive miniature replicas, engraved, of the shield, worked in silver and mounted on a blackwood base. This competition arouses a great deal of interest amongst the cadets, and is invaluable on account of the effect it exercises upon the marksmanship of the various companies comprising the battalion. The shield, which was donated by Mr. J. Jordan, Liebig Street, is at present on view at the establishment of Messrs. Cramond and Dickson. Area 72 B, of which Warrnambool is the head-quarters, has now won the trophy twice in succession. During the afternoon a medal donated by Mr. J. Mainland for the best-drilled cadet of the "G" Company competition team was also the object of enthusiastic rivalry, and the work shown by the contestants, who were judged singly, was very creditable. The medal was won by Cadet J. Ward with 91 points, Corporal Grimshow being second with 90. Three others - Cadets Mark Jukes and McKellar and Corporal Malone tied for third place with 88 points, their drill being sufficiently good to merit special mention. Lieut. S. Pollard A.O. and Lieut. A. Jordan acted as judges on behalf of the Battalion Competition Committee. Warrnambool Standard Monday 18 May 1914 Page 3 Last edited by Investment; 06-04-15 at 09:28 AM. |
