I'm surprised it has taken the Taxman so long to look at this (based on the fact that he will tax just about anything to generate revenue).

But, surely law abiding, honest and tax paying people have nothing to worry about?

Or I am being naive!!!

Can I suggest to any visiting tax men that there are large numbers of sellers on ebay selling new reproduction army badges as authentic originals.

Now if they are deceiving their customers then they are probably deceiving you, the tax man too, by paying vat on the margin scheme (secondhand goods) when they should be paying you full vat on the sale price (new goods)

Ask those £15 'original' glengarry badge sellers for their auction receipts from their purcase of stock.

No, not asked for when I signed up.

This happened in Canada a couple of years ago, but there were several "conditions" put on the legal request for records from ebay. The vendor must have been identified as a "power seller", and have sales of more than $3000 annually, with minimum sales of $1000 three months in a row.

It was my understanding that it is already the same case on ebay.co.uk, I vaguely recall an ebay message on the subject. I may be mistaken, though. Don't forget, as well, that the media does take a while sometimes to catch hold of things.

That's a small sum, is it not $30,000 and $10,000? if it's similar here it's going to be carnage

I'm fairly certain that under 'EU anti money laundering' rules Paypal can disclose to Inland Revenue any of your transactions and as you pretty much have to take Paypal they can check what you've sold. I don't think it's a problem if you are just selling a few bits from your collection but if you are doing it as a business they could come after you, assuming you don't declare it. I doubt if they would need your NI number either, they could cross reference with address, bank account etc, they can do anything they want, I'm fairly certain they have more powers than the police.
I guess they are trying to get as much money back in the coffers to pay for the Olympics, already 3x over budget!

I think that is who they will be after, soft target Mr Law Abiding Citizen(Subject). The dodgy ones seem to able to disappear but if you've got a family and a mortgage you have nowhere to hide!
