Question (1) How many apprentices have been recruited for the January 1993 intake to the Army School of TAFE at Bonegilla, Vic. Question(2) In which trades have the recruits been selected to train. Answer (1) 194 applicants have been recruited for the 1993 intake to the Army College of TAFE. Answer (2) The recruits have been selected for training in all trades. The list of trades includes electronic tradespersons, electrical fitters, electrical mechanics, fitters and turners, plumbers and gas fitters, carpenters and joiners and motor mechanics. The (unofficial) Army College of TAFE badges are around... although they are not common. I think (much like the 161 Aviation hat badge from the 1980's)... they are often mistaken for one of the ordinary mainstream variants that they are based upon. The 161 Avn was clearly designed to be 'camouflaged in plain sight.' . Just as a by the by... the 'TAFE' hat badge illustrated in Volume 1, was bought from an IS Wright catalogue listing about 10 years ago and I have seen one other since. While the 161 Aviation hat badge was found in among a 100+ item job lot at a Brisbane Dealer's auction. When I found it in the job lot... I was very lucky... because I did not know the badge existed at the time I noticed that the design did not look quite right. My point is... I think that if you know what oddities are out there... then that's more than half the battle of being able to track them down. Knowledge is power I suppose... because these types of Items are easy to pass by. So, knowing what you are looking for is often the key. There are quite a few other historical oddities of course. I'm sure members are as aware of them, as I am. There's MINURSO hat badge and the first pattern Commando Coy hat and collars are hard to get hold of (especially the collars), then there is the R Simpson Aust marked Federation Star Hat badge and the vanishingly rare matching collar. I say vanishingly rare, but I have seen two examples... the one in a private collection was put on the cover of Vol1, to refute the considered wisdom that they were never produced. Meanwhile, the cover of Volume 2 also shows the 6th Battalion, the Royal Melbourne Regiment (Queens Crown) collars, both the 'OR' variant and the now quite rare officers' 2 colour enamel variant. I've only seen 1 of those officers' collars for sale in the last 15 years... although I have seen two Capricornia QC hat badges up for grabs in that time-frame. I'm sure forum members could list many other scarce and odd ball Australian Army insignia... but I'll finish with the observation that the 6th Btn Officers' enamel (QC) was picked up in a grab bag of random and unidentified crap in an eBay listing... but the photo showed one little gem in that mix. So I return to my earlier point, if you know exactly what you are looking for, that's more than half the battle won. It's all about the hunt anyway, isn't it? If it was easy, we'd all have complete collections by now THEN... we'd have to start collecting something else!Happy hunting! Yours in research and collecting Mark
