Default Unknown cap badge.
From a photograph taken in Dunfermline in 1943. I do not recognise the cap badge being worn by this Lieutenant. Your thoughts would be welcome.

Quite a few of the men appear to have officer rank visible on their shoulders. I am now thinking that they might have been attending a course in Dunfermline. It would also explain why an officer of the R.E.M.E. is sitting on the ground in front rather than in the middle of the front row.

All wrong. It was a cocked cap retention course and these men are best of class.

There is a formation sign visible which may help to identify the unit if we can work out what it is.

To my eye it looks like the Formation badge for the 104th Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment, Image attached from War Department Militaria site (no connection to Seller).

What do you think?

According to this website the Regiment served with Anti Aircraft Command until July 1943 when it was posted to the Middle East so could fit in with the date of your photograph.

that is a very good call. The dark bar being worn above the formation sign being a Royal Artillery Arm of Service strip.
