Default Army Commandos

The Army badge donating Commando qualification (red dagger on black triangular segment) has always been worn on the left upper sleeve on shirts, DPM smocks and the old heavy duty green pullover, as well as on No.2 Dress. The Army badge was introduced in 1972 and was, of course, a copy of the World War Two formation sign worn by both Army and RM Commandos on both sleeves of battledress from late 1944. This use of the red dagger on black triangle denoting Army Commando continued when CS95 came out.

The confusion started when the Royal Marines re-introduced the red dagger as their formation sign in the late 1990s, worn on the left sleeve of DPM combat dress under the 'ROYAL MARINES COMMANDO' shoulder title. This has now been replaced by the 3 Commando Brigade TRF (black dagger on olive green square) normally worn on the right sleeve of DPM smocks and shirts below the shoulder titles and wings. Note this is a formation badge which is also worn by Army ranks who serve with the Commando Brigade but it does not denote Commando qualification. When the ISAF badge is worn on the right sleeve in Afghanistan, the TRF can be moved to the left sleeve. For Commando qualified Army ranks the natural preference would be to wear the qualification badge rather than the TRF - I've never seen both worn together on the left sleeve.

However, as already mentioned, the new Army regulations specify that on all MTP combat clothing any Army Commando qualification will be denoted by shoulder titles reading 'ARMY COMMANDO' and that the Dagger qualification badge will now only be worn on No.2 Dress.

Regards,

Colin S

DECISION of the ARMY DRESS COMMITTEE (2008)

Army Commando shoulder title. Authority for Army personnel on the established strength of 3 Cdo Bde RM who had passed the AACC to wear the Army Commando shoulder title on combat clothing and Jersey Heavy Wool. These shoulder titles are not to be worn once an individual was posted out of the Bde.

HQ FLEET had agreed to provide funding and an approved SUR will provide 5 sets of shoulder titles per individual by Oct 08. This proposal had been circulated and approved by all members and was ratified.

Decision. Approved by ADC.

Letter Size and Style to be changed to the same as used on RM & Royal Navy Commando Titles.

Ian,

That badge is not the one for No 1s. The No 1's badge is a smaller gold embroidered dagger on a dark blue backing.

The same colour badge should also be worn on Mess Dress, but it is normally found in many different colours.

Please can anyone tell me when this sign was first used as a vehicle marking

This is the reverse of a transfer measuring 155mm high 115mm wide.

The bit about not wearing the shoulder titles after being posted out of 3 Cdo Bde seems to be widely ignored. (Probably because, now the dagger is not worn on combat dress, there is nothing else to show you’ve passed the AACC.)
