The only thing which is correct is the word Colonial sorry - my website should be a guide for you, cheers Dean

To be quite honest, originals were made using the same material and manufacturing as any other Edwardian badge made here, so it is a simple matter of taking a close look before you part with any money.

These badges have, sadly, been reproduced to death.

Whilst some are fakes from 1970s fake dies there are also a great many restrikes from the original dies of the Squadron badges. The exception to this is the Australian Squadron, for which I have not yet encountered a restrike but there are plenty of fakes.

I read somewhere these were reproduced for the first time in the 1920s/30s.

They are a popular target for all sorts of fakery and Tom Foolery and catch even experienced collectors out like here https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...t=Australasian - that badge is not genuine.

Here are a couple other Australasian Squadron badges with some more artisan fakery, one on hex loops (attached) which recently sold on eBay and another sporting a less commonly seen dubious Gaunt plaque https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...85&postcount=1 .

The key to all King’s Colonials badges is quality of the strike and detail, loop position and type of loop, the metal and its finish and crucially the sharpness of voiding and edges.

Dean’s website is a truly excellent resource and Frank’s points sage advice.

Despite promising myself I’d never even attempt collecting these I’ve managed to obtain genuine examples of all four squadron badges above, if you’re interested I can post pictures with some observations and tips I’ve learned.
