Which regiment?
Anyone have an idea which mob this chap belongs to? The boss bugle looks like it has some kind of crown/coronet above it. Uniform is standard with black buttons and snake belt.

Looks like the Rifle Brigade to me.

The headgear is definitely in the style of the Rifles for the turn of the 20th century period. And the cap badge looks like it could be rifles ot LI. if rifles, the cord on he cap would be green, and probably the same for LI. My LI bugle has green cords.

What makes it Rifle Brigade?

A few more images. His 'bayonet' does seem to be a sword.

I can tell that the cap, plume, uniform etc are dark and that the boss badge is presumably of white metal but what makes this specifically Rifle Brigade rather than another Rifles unit, Volunteer or TF?
For example, accepting that the cap is black and the boss badge is of white metal, are the top vent of the cap, its cords, plume, cord boss and Turks head black or dark green? Rifle Brigade could be a good candidate, but is the unit definitely Rifle Brigade? Does the white metal rather than blackened boss badge make it so? I have a number of Rifles Caps and I've got to admit I don't know what units some are to in the absence of badges and plumes. |

Hello Leigh, you're right in that this chap could be from a number of Rifle Regiments, there's nothing in the way of insignia and certainly no colour to help, but what about the crowned bugle badge? Does that narrow it down?

The crowned bugle was a kind of general design boss badge for many units, I don't know whether the one shown in the photo, being of white metal, is an indication of Rifle Brigade, I wonder if the crown is Guelphic? Again, I don't know if that would indicate Rifle Brigade.
Sorry, I'm putting a question mark on the Rifle Brigade identification without being able to suggest an alternative. |

No problem Leigh. It's a difficult one. Personally it makes no difference to me if he's RB or not. I just have a thing about Rifle Regiments and LI, regular, territorials or otherwise

As Leigh says there were during that period a significant number of rifles styled volunteer units dressed very similarly, especially between 1881 and 1908, and even after that the number was high among the Territorial Force. The enclosed photos show a busby of a West Yorkshire Regiment volunteer battalion and full length image of a soldier from a London Regiment battalion wearing full dress.
