Hi
Hope you like these sandcast badges, they were all given to me by the people who made and wore them, the NMR (Natal Mounted Rifles) was given to me by Hugh Hardingham who during WW2 was a Corporal and later in the 60s-70s was their Colonel.
your comments would be appreciated, you may like to look at this thread that was started a couple of months ago? Corker or Crook? 53rd West Sydney Regt, will post pics when get home as work computer will not let me!!

Brian mentioned that the lead badges were made in SA Railway workshops; would this have been in the war theatre when soldiers lost badges or because there were shortages which would then make semi official?

Iain
Hi Iain, I believe that some of the lead badges were made by a company in Jo'Burg, officially ordered. Regards Andrew

Some nice examples, actually this is the first lead SAAF badge I have seen.

The NMR badge is also a rather nice example with all its lugs.

Alex might be able to assist regards the Navy badge, they are more his field.

Regards
Brian

Thanks Brian, will contact Alex, (if he does not conact me first!), all I know about the Navy badge is that someone told me years ago, when I first got it, that it could possibly be WW1 RND, but i'm not sure?, it is rather heavy though!, also I saw one the same, go one ebay sometime ago for over £100!!
As for the SAAF ones they where made by a mate in a POW camp in Italy, they where made just to see if things could be made without getting caught!!
Thanks
BM

Hi All
Interesting thread... I have begun to wonder whether the sand-cast badges were also made in South Africa, because I have a couple which predate 1927 when the 'Eendracht Maakt Magt' became 'Eendrag Maak Mag'. I have quite a few sand cast badges to add to those mentioned.
CTH; First City Reg, SA Service Corps, PAG, SA Irish, NMR beret badges in sand cast & lead, R&HB, SAAF.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex, the one on the far left is actually WW2. They were cast in Egypt presumably from a badge that was left there in WW1. The die struck badge like this is WW1. I am not sure about the others. Regards Andrew

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the info. That would explain the first & second pics I posted. I have seen more of the 2nd style, so I assume the guys broke the scroll off to make it more like the regular badge. I have seen more of the scroll-lesss ones than the other.
Cheers,
Alex

Hi Guys

Been away awhile, thought you guys might like to see this new batch of WW2 lead cast acquired recently, some I have never seen before others a bit more common.

Some are "blackened" two silver washed others with a brass look whilst the two artillery badges were given a bronze wash. Altogether a nice mix

One interesting one is the SA pay Corps with different lugs to the normal lead cast! It may well be a possible later version lead cast badge as the majority of these lead badge lugs are not that strong and would I suspect not "stand the test of time" , appologies for using this famous slogan of a famous SA beer but it sums it up well!

Brian

Badges from top left to bottom right, as laid out in first attachment:

Pretoria Regt, Middelandse Regt, SA Pay Corp, Chaplain cap, Imperial Light Horse, SA Engineers, Prince Alfreds Guard, Regiment De Le Ray, WAAS, Collar/Beret General Service (small bok in porthole) SAAF Senior NCO, SAA Collar, Transvaal Scottish, SAA Cap with loose wheel, SA Tank Corps (the angle it is lying makes it look like the modern School of Armour), Rand Light Infantry and SAA collar.

Hi Brian,

that's a really nice selection you've picked up there and some unusual ones.
The badge bottom centre; is it a school of armour collar? I cant identify it.

The taste did change but the badges haven't, lol.

Iain

Hi Brian,
Yea I agree some really nice stuff there!, the one above the school of armour collaris either a collar or cap badge (they were the same) for the SA Womens Aux Army Services (WAAS/VLHD), Just for interst the cap badge has VLHD/WAAS whereas the collars have WAAS/VLHD
