Default Rhodesia Regiment

After UDI was declared by Rhodesia the crown was broken off the top of this badge and the badge in that condition was in use until a new one was produced, which moved the crown to the centre and placed the Rhodesian lion (Symbol of the old British South Africa Company) on top, in place of the crown.

Not sure about the red backing, but I believe a red diamond, larger than the badge, to have been in general use by the Rhodesia Regiment as, in addition to 3RR mentioned in an earlier posting, I am pretty sure I have seen it in Bulawayo in the 1970's, worn behind the badge by members of 2 R.R.

I have been told that this badge was worn by the school cadets in Nyasaland too. They appear to have had some affiliation at the time. Regards Andrew

That sounds very possible for the distant days of Federation - Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, also known as the Central African Federation, which existed between 1953 and 1963.

Hello All

Wall has the red diamond backing in use by all battalions wearing the Queen's Crown fron the 1960's-1970.The convention previously was to wear regimental colours in a diamond badge backing with the number of red stripes matching the battalion for the 1st-3rd battalion.
There is some diversity in dates for these between Wall and Radford.

Cheers

Dave

Hi,

The regimental hat flash for the Royal Rhodesia Regiment was a black and green diamond with one red stripe for Salisbury, two for Bulawayo, and three for the 3rd (Northern Rhodesia) Battalion. (Lancashirefusilier has a couple of beautiful examples of these in his: Royal Rhodesia Regt Album). The regiment also had several cadet Battalions who wore the same cap badge, and the respective flash for their area. Trainees undergoing their training wear a red flash.

Regards,

Zob.

Hello everybody, I've recently bought on in plastic, with the KC superimposed on the cross... any hints about the vintage?

I would go along with an official version of Queen's Crown to 1970, but remember, we in Rhodesia were 'rebels', and so the crown got broken off by the battalions I knew.

The crown moved to centre of cross is right, but I never saw a plastic one in service, but accept it was, as materials were in very short supply in the 1970's.
Any clue as to who it was made by?. Matthews Engineering, Bulawayo, comes to mind as a possible.
