Stripes
Over the last 3 days my husband and I telephoned 20 serving and former nco's of our acquaintance as a straw poll of terminology (nothing better to do when you're retired) with the following question : What term do you use to describe the rank insignia of nco's up to the rank of sergeant in the British army ? Whilst one or two made reference to the distinction in rank title within the Household Cavalry, all 20 used the word 'stripes' - no-one used 'bars' and no-one used 'chevrons'. So, I think a previous contributor to this thread is correct - there is official document-based terminology and then there is the terminology we actually use. I am now persuaded to continue using 'stripes' - and 'pips' too, of course ! How I enjoy being a dinosaur ! GD
