RAF formed 1st April 1918. Former RFC members may well have been using that badge post that date, but cloth RAF badges were in use for other ranks- the metal RAF badge being 1919 onwards. Regards, Paul.

Thanks very much for that information, Paul.

In that case, if I understand you correctly, it seems slightly unusual if he was wearing such a cap badge, as he would not have been former RFC, and as he was an NCO, he should have had the cloth cap badge.

Perhaps it was something to do with him being a bandsman. Aren't band members more likely to wear the more formal or traditional style of uniform of a regiment? I know he is not in formal dress wear, but I wonder if it was something along those lines. For example, the other members of the band had those badges so he was expected to fit in. Pure speculation I know.

Many thanks,

Chris
