Default Help to identify this CEF First Contingent Cap Badge

The soldier in the photograph is believed to be John Paton. He enlisted in the CEF 9th Battalion through the 101st Regiment (Edmonton Fusiliers) in 1914. He was transferred to the 2nd Battalion and subsequently killed on April 22, 1914, during the 2nd Battle of Ypres.

I'm not knowledgeable about CEF cap badges, but to me the badge he's wearing doesn't look like either the 2nd or 9th Battalion, nor even the General Service badge. Again, the soldier is only believed to be Paton.

Is anyone able to identify the cap badge being worn?

Thanks,
Dan.
