Agreed that it's very probably a belt buckle of some sort.

The six pointed star is usually associated with Jews and Israel - 'Mogen David' or ''Star of David' - but others use it too. In the 1980s when I was in Nigeria, for example, every market sold large copper pennies with holes in the center, for carrying on strings I think, which had the Mogen David on one side. They had been the principal currency in the first half of the century. Never managed to find out whether it had significance to Nigerians or was chosen on a whim by some British designer, but they were everywhere.

Could be North African / Middle Eastern or even Asian but it doesn't look European made to me.
