Default Unusual Royal Norfolk Combination

The attached photo seems to show a Royal Norfolk Regiment Officer with a
7th Armoured Division formation sign (above the Royal Norfolk Regiment 1st Battalion patch)

This is an unusual combination and something I haven't been able to trace the origins of in any of my reference books or on the internet!

Any thoughts or ideas please?

Cheers

John

A few possible explanations:
The 7th Armoured Division/Brigade Formation sign shown is being worn on what seems to be a pre 1949 pattern Battledress with WW2 Medal ribbons + MID?. The red/brown rat on black rectangle was worn from around 1942 through to the late 1960s/early 1970s by the Division post War and later by the 7th Armoured Brigade in BAOR. (FBs were not worn on dpm combat kit which was introduced in the early 1970s). So, is it:
1. The CO of 1 R NORFOLK when (if) the Battalion served at any time in the Division/Brigade.
2. A Lieutenant Colonel on the staff of the Divisional or Brigade Headquarters.

Not exactly sure on the shoulder titles, but would the black on yellow suggest post-WW2?

Agreed. Not at all unusual - he's correctly dressed. Is that a Pre-1952 crown on his epaulette?

Looks to have pre war service judging by the position of his 39-45 ribbon and yes the MID, sewn on so not his issued one, possibly a post war replacement... should be traceable....

Further to my earlier post it looks as though 1 R NORFOLK was in 31 (Lorried) Infantry Brigade in 7 Armoured Division from around 1946 to July 1948. Brigade Formation Badges were (generally) not worn in BAOR until the 1950s so this would fit the picture as being of the CO 1 R NORFOLK.
