Default Para Regt

A Wehrmacht photograph held in a French archive - a PW taken post-D Day. Can any expert identify the unit by the embroidered Saint badge? The unofficial badge of A Tp, 40 (RM) Cdo - a Saint - was adopted later by A Coy, 40 Cdo RM and was, it was said, initially adopted because an early Tp Comd was a Capt Charteris RM.

Mike,

Leslie Charteris, author of the Simon Templar (The Saint) series of books, of course.

I had no idea he had been a Royal Marine. Very interesting, thanks.

Peter.

Default Para badge

Interestingly he is wearing a parachute Regt cap badge, nothing to mention RM Commando.

Badly worded on my part - there is no suggestion that he's not Para Regt - the mention of A Tp/A Coy 40 Cdo RM was just out of interest, and I've seen nothing to suggest that the Royals ever wore the Saint on uniform. But it did feature on the A Coy, 40 Cdo RM tie in the early 1960s.

There was a few movies on 'You Tube' on the web that clearly showed the saint on Para Helmets and Smocks from around the time of the Malaya emergency. I did not keep the link, sorry.

Marc

Sorry not 'you tube' but here http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=63144
