Default Mystery badge

Hello all,

I’m continuing to work through my backlog of badges for cataloguing and I’ve found another one that I can’t identify. I’ve done a search of the forum but I can’t find anything to match it but it’s possible that I didn’t use the correct search terms. I’ve also looked through the plates in Gaylor but can’t see anything that matches.

Can someone please identify it for me?

Cheers

Steve

I would agree with Bob but I have it labelled as MILITARY PROVOST STAFF CORPS. I may have mine named wrong.....

Jerry
You may well be right as earlier stuff is not my forte. I know "prisons" became "Provost" but do not know dates. Colin Carnall wrote a book on the RMP the information is in there

It appears to be a bronzed brass OSD cap badge with fixing tabs to the rear so it has no connection to the MPSC which was an other-ranks only corps. This pattern of badge with the wreath has been discussed on the forum before and I don't think it has any connection to the MPSC at all.

A George 5th (c1910-1936) pattern, bronzed, officer's service dress cap badge for The Military Provost Staff Corps

The Military Prison Staff Corps was formed in 1901 under Army Order 241. It was redesignated the Military Provost Staff Corps in 1906.

I do not think it was/is an Other-Ranks only Corps, beside would not the RSM and other WO1's wear an OSD Badge anyway in the past.

In December 2015, the Military Provost Staff Regiment was formed as part of 1st Military Police Brigade. The regiment is currently organised as follows:

Regimental Headquarters, at Berechurch Hall Camp, Colchester Garrison
Headquarters Company
No. 1 Company (Army Reserve)
SCF Company
Detention Company

The Commanding Officer of the regiment is a Lieutenant Colonel and also holds the title of Commandant, Military Corrective Training Centre.

Currently Lt Col Leigh Parker, AGC (MPS), MBE

Those badges with the wreath have long been dismissed as being MPSC.

At that period in time the MPSC was other ranks only. Officers were seconded from their own units. Those badges with the wreath are not MPSC in spite of what some publications might have us believe.

So;

What is this badge?

What was the MPSC badge?

What documentary proof do you have that the MPSC was other-ranks only?

The badge with the wreath is most likely Corps of Army Schoolmasters. The MPSC wore the GvR cypher and crown badge with no wreath. As for proof that the MPSC was other ranks only, written and photographic evidence is all the proof I need.

Hi Steve
I have put together a number of articles referring to this cap badge. Basically it is a rough badge made during GVR period yet has no allocation to any British / Commonwealth unit.
The incorrect identification as this cap badge being the Military Provost Staff Corps (MPSC) within the K&K reference plus those authors who have used that reference as true within there own publications has coursed many issues.
It is not an active or operational cap badge and definitely not the MPSC.

I have attached both the MPSC and CMP / RMP badges to validate the issue.
