Yes they did, they man the main gates on the RAF bases now too, not just the army bases, they are now the equivalent of the MOD Guard Service/Northern Ireland Security Guard Service in the UK and the Gibraltar Defence Guard Service and until recently the Germany Guard Service.

A totally meaningless name and a contradiction in terms!

Yes Chris it is. This badge has been around for several years now and it did replace the Army Depot Police badge.

Default SFP Cyprus cap badge

Raised in 1995 replacing the Army Depot Police and the remnants of the Royal Air Force Auxiliaries in Cyprus. There is a metal shoulder title with the letters S.F.P. Hope this is of help.

Badges such as these are quite interesting in that while 100% genuine they were never authorised by the Army Dress Committee. Instead, local military authorities were given a budget and authority to fund and authorise such items at a local level. As such, they do not appear in MoD documentation.

Other example include such badges from the Falkland Islands Defence Force. From Wikipedia:

The Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF) is the locally maintained volunteer defence unit in the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory. The FIDF works alongside the military units supplied by the United Kingdom to ensure the security of the islands.

Note that the unit '...works along side..." and is "...locally maintained..." .

The badges used by the FIDF were part of the inventory with NSN up to the 1990's but I have never found their inclusion in any MoD documentation from then on.

Reading further:

"...the Falkland Islands Defence Force today is funded entirely by the Falkland Islands government and has an annual budget of £400,000.[16]..."

[16] The Times Article, March 6th 2010, retrieved 23 July 2011

I suspect that this badge, Security Force Cyprus, comes/came under similar control.

Chris
