Attributable? Cheshire rgt osd badge
hi all
i just picked this badge up today and there is a name "Jimmy Rimmer" scratched onto the back. a quick google search came up with the following. would it be to far fetched to assume this could be the original owner of the badge? bc Name: RIMMER, JAMES Initials: J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Lieutenant Regiment/Service: Cheshire Regiment Age: 25 Date of Death: 16/10/1944 Service No: 256143 Additional information: Son of Thomas and Florence Rimmer; husband of Dorothy Rimmer, of Hoole, Cheshire. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: VII. G. 20. Cemetery: FAENZA WAR CEMETERY |

Not far fetched at all - very likely in fact, it fits all the criteria ! It wasn't dug up in Italy was it ? I have seen other badges with what appear to be names or service numbers on them - but all ORs and I have never followed up the stories.
I have a few badges that were given to me by the original wearers and a silver Lpl Pals with the name and address of the original owner on the back, but he seems to have survived and it is brooched anyway. But yours is almost unique and quite an emotional object really - I wonder if the family is still around ? |

I have a very nice Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers badge of WW1 vintage with the soldiers number 17594 stamped into the slider. When I bought it the dealer told me who the original owner was, and also offered me his medals as well. I had it for a few years, when out of curiosity one day I but the name in the CWGC search, and found he was killed in action in May 1916.
BILL Initials: T Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Unit Text: 9th Bn. Date of Death: 17/05/1916 Service No: 17594 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: E. 23. Cemetery: BEAUVAL COMMUNAL CEMETERY I suppose it must have been returned to his next of kin. Although I don't collect medals, I do regret that I didn't buy the set now. At least the badge is being looked after with much pride. John Last edited by Faugh-A-Ballagh; 27-01-10 at 06:21 PM. Reason: Spelling mistake |
