Default Scrolless flat topped East Surreys

I've just had a moment of inspiration or madness and as this is a forum I will leave it open to discussion. In my album is a scrolless East Surreys with the enigmatic flat top. Keith has one and Dave a couple too. Well, if Keith's theory that they were for specific companies and battalions is correct, it would make sense that these items sans scroll might well be collar badges. I also take into the account the care taken in removing the scroll.
I might be well wide of the mark but theories are there for discussion and argument.

I would consider that they were a pre WW1 Battalion affection. I think companies would be asking a lot of an RSM! There is at least one precedence from 1st Kings Liverpools wearing a different badge to the authorised one.
