Answer to a Norfolk query
I have often seen these Norfolk badges and wondered who actually wore them, today I found this hat with the badge in question.
Norfolk Girl Guides as can be seen by the label inside, not an item that I will keep, so anyone interested PM me. Rob |

Hi rob, in my albums you will see some more photos of that badge. Somewhere I have a copy of the letter about how this badge came to be used. I think the wife of the last col. of the Royal Norfolk was in charge of the guides.

Norfolk badge
Andrew, this badge has long been a bit of a puzzle to me, but now it almost makes sense, interesting how they came to adopt Britannia as a badge as opposed to the normal Girl Guide insignia.

And here are so notes taken from it.
26.1.1922 county commissioner of girl guides Rachel kay-shuttleworth writes to lady Leicester suggesting that her suggestion of Britannia as a county badge would make a charming badge for the use of her guides. 2.2.1923 general sir Peter Strickland colonel Norfolk regiment writes Dear miss Colman, I have received your letter about the badge for the guides . I would ask you if possible to adopt a figure of Britannia which is not identical to the one used by the regt. March 1923 miss Colman writes I saw all the badges at the regimental tailors ( f.a. Stones) and checked the one used on the collar of the uniform which they say is different from the one on the mens caps. If you have Norfolk underneath it will certainly be different. April 23 1923 an order for 350 badges is placed with gg hq. 7d each. So that’s all the written facts, and most of the names have strong connections with the Norfolk regt and owned most of Norfolk at that time. |

Norfolk Guides
Andrew, many thanks for putting up this very interesting fact on the Norfolk Guides badge, I never cease to be amazed how much knowledge forum members seem to have and are willing to share.
