Default OCTU Hat Badge - 1 Training Group - circa 1988

Officer Cadet Training Unit Hat Badge - 1 Training Group - circa 1988

This is an anodised badge with 2 protrusions on the back. I have seen these also in brass with pinbacks, lugs and also a slider version.

There is some conjecture about the authenticity of this badge (it was available for sale in various messes as a private purchase badge) but this particular badge was worn by the 1 Training Group (located in Wacol, Queensland) RSM who gave this to me a couple of years ago.

Default Anodised OCTU Hat Badge

Hi, These badges were not official issue. I was at 2 Trg Gp OCTU in 1989-90 when a batch were made but not worn, along with some bullion beret badges. They were all private purchase not issue items. They are an anodised white metal casting of an original brass badge which also had these solid lugs on the rear.

The original brass badge dated from the 1970s and had a semi-official status and is note in Cossum's book on Badges of the Australian Army in the the 1960-1985 section.

These cast anodised badges were also manufactured in pin back and some were worn just prior to the closing of the OCTUs in the mid 1990s along with an anodised shoulder title.

The slider back, which was made of brass, was also made and worn in the early 1990s being another unofficial issue.

best regards

It would appear that this badge was seen in a few variations.

I have seen these versions:

anodised with pins
anodised with protrusions (as in picture above)
brass with pins
brass with lugs
anodised with slider

Might have to try and find pictures of all the variations.

Default Anodised OCTU Hat Badge

Hi Mick,

Here is a photo of the obverse and reverses of the badges I have. The top left is the original brass casting with lugs from the 1970s. The middle top is the anodised casting with lugs from 1989-90 and was bought be me at the time. The top right is the brass slider back from the early 1990s (this one came from 3 Trg Gp.). The pin back was acquired from a militaria shop in Canberra in about 2005 and is made from a different original than the others (smaller star etc). The bullion beret badge was also bought by me in 1989-90 at OCTU 2 Trg Gp.

regards

Dave

I think what you should bear in mind, and how I class badges is:

1) Produced for Officail Issue including later officers badges.

2) Produced for Private Purchase for wear in uniform

within this class are

a) Officers Badges which were at one time private purchase
b) Officers Bullion Badges which were never issued
c) Sold by service shops for wear in uniform by other ranks (example Guards Regiments purchased Metal Badges instead of the issued AA example)

3) Produced for Relatives & Collectors as good copies

4) Theatre Produced (i.e. cast)

5) Made to decieve

Problem is that provenance is not always clear

Nice one Dave! Thanks for sharing your pictures.

I've never seen a bullion OCTU badge before.
