Default SAAF/SALM titles

Hi Guys
Did officers wear the SAAF/SALM metal titles on the shoulder straps, or was this strictly an OR thing?

Hi Mike, I can't confirm 100% as air force isn't my speciality, but did see this jacket at a local museum. It has no titles. Regards Andrew

Mike

Apparently officers did not, well that is what I been told. And yes the same source said it was only OR's that wore them.

I too would like to clarify this 100%.

Hello Mike,
To the best of my knowledge these were only worn by rank and file, I've certainly never seen any evidence that they were worn by officers and there is no shortage of good clear photographs either for the second world war period

UDF dress regulations only specify s/t for private up to warrant officer. Most pictures you come across dont show officers wearing s/t.

Hello Steven,
When you say most pictures, have you actually seen one that shows a commissioned officer wearing the metal bi lingual titles?
Regards Frank

Very good question Frank, I'd like to see a photo of an officer wearing them. I've seen photos of OR's wearing the red overseas straps on their shoulders, and no titles at all, wondering if some officers took the liberty to wear the titles. I could see them being worn by lower ranks like Lt.s as their pips wouldn't be crowded on the shoulder strap, but the more pips you add, the less space there would be with the title on there!

Hi Frank,
No sorry I have not. I went through all my SAAF pics and could not find an officer wearing titles.

Hello Mike,
All I can say to you is that I have never seen and evidence whatsoever that they were ever worn by officers.
Regards Frank

As Mike has said, the pips would make things too crowded. I have examples of officers uniform and epaulettes and none have the titles, nor photos I have.
