On closer inspection it has some verdigris but it also seems to have been blackened. The 4th battalion was blackened brass. This badge is bi metal. Any thoughts ? |

Blackened badges
What took place 100+ years ago will be speculated long after us forum members have long gone.
Did a 4th Btn man lose his cap badge and got a bi-metal badge and blacken it? Was it blackened for a ceremony? (I have a pagri badge that has traces of blackening on it) Original badges which I hope we all have in our collections are historical items, whether worn on a parade ground at Aldershot or an item worn in a cap by an original member of the BEF in 1914 they all have stories to tell, but rarely do they give up their secrets. Not really sure that badge was blackened. I have seen quite a few badges with strange corrosion and patination that can be mistaken for blackening.

Ok. So this badge is probably just really manky. Or slim chance for whatever reason someone has tried to blacken it. It does have some verdigris. Would you guys attempt to remove this, and probably everything else. If it was not for the verdigris I would leave it , as it is a common badge. Your thoughts appreciated.
Thanks Chris |

It's your call. I feel quite confident that it is just corroded and would clean it up to preserve it.
