Default Middlesex Regiment Officers Cap Badge

A Middlesex Regiment Officers cap badge, on a swatch in the regimental colours. I am just puzzled by the missing "Middlesex Regt." scroll and the different shape of the wreath: is it some sort of Battalion distinction? Thank you for your knowledge and all the best!

I suspect is a collar badge worn on an item of headdress where the full size cap badge might be too big, perhaps for use on the beret.

I am sure the experts on the regiment will come along with chapter and verse.

The extract below is from "Badge Backings and Special Embellishments "

Thank you Peter, very interesting. I had not thought of the possibility it could be a collar badge...

Agree with Peter, i also think an officers collar badge IMO i've seen a couple before one silver & not collecting collars i dont know the dates these were issued & worn, not sure why it would be worn as a cap badge i cant find any info on that i will dig deeper to see what i can find out,if the dates work out poss as Peter said for beret wear, the blood & sand patch was worn during both wars and post WW11.

Badges like this with a regimental coloured backing were popular in the immediate post war period to brighten up the khaki beret or GS cap - as per the photo.

Undoubtedly an example from this period worn by an officer. The silver collar badge shown was also worn on the officers coloured FS cap.

Some units began to wear them in WW2, GOC of 43rd Wessex Div ordered that all units would wear a distinctive coloured patch behind their cap badge. Pic is from the history of 2nd Middlesex Regt(pub1946), not the best but it does look like the smaller badge.

I was told by a retired King's officer (long gone) that they wore OSD collar badges in their berets after the war. The particular item is on the bottom row of my regular badge collection (I don't know how to make a link to My Pictures but it's there).
