OK, that is very interesting. You say that in 1914 ERA 4th to 1st class are equivalent to seaman CPOs - does that mean my man who was ERA 2nd class would wear a CPO uniform?

Yes, he would have worn the Class III uniform shown in the photo above, but with no insignia, altho paid as a CPO he would not have worn the three cuff buttons as he was not a ChERA2 or ChERA1.
I am hoping David Howell will respond & can give us an opinion on if he would have worn the PO or CPO cap badge, as I am uncertain on that one, RCN B |

Here's a period CPO ERA's cap badge with the purple velvet backing to the anchor. I believe the PO's badge would have been plain red embroidered?

engine room clarification ??
I have read the piece about the number of buttons that a ERA has got to show at what rank he has,. My father was E.R.A.4 and on one of his photos he's got only 2 cuff buttons . So what did that signify he was?? Thank you.Dave Gibson.
