Polish Graves
Anyone know what the details and units of these two men are? ie the English description of
Sierz. S. Babicki 9 Komp Zaop Ppor. Z. Wierzbowski 3 Dyon. Poc Panc or the unabbreviated Polish version would be helpful These are two war graves in Alnwick Cemetery in Northumberland, I believe these are unofficially in the care of the War Graves Commission but are not included in their online database. Also would these men have worn the standard Polish Eagle cap badge (and has anyone a photo of one I could have??) [yes I do wander around cemeteries in the middle of winter looking for war graves ]

Very Handy! 9 Komp Zaop is 9th Supply Company, and it looks like his unit was part of the 'Polish Resettlement Corps' which was at Brunton Airfield, Chathill, (North of Alnwick)

Hi Mike,
Its the 9th Supply Company. Could of possibly died in a resettlement camp, but one is never sure until the records can be viewed. P.S. This site will help: http://www.polishwargraves.nl/abbrev.htm

It looks like that S.Babicki was Sierz(ant).=Sergeant in "9 Supply Company". ZAOP=Supply, and Komp=Company.

Great stuff chaps job done in a few minutes.
But 'Dyon' = Squadron, I assume they use this in the cavalry sense as well as airforce like us? in this case 3 armoured squadron? Anyway I can write something now for these men. (Although I will wait until the spring to re-photograph Alnwick I think, camera doesn't do snow and war graves in the same shot nicely)

As for Z.Wierzbowski,PPOR=Podporucznik is an Air Force rank of Pilot Officer,DYON=Air Force Squadron. (The same rank of PPOR,in the army is for 2/Lt.)

And they are on that site, but without a translation of the units: http://www.polishwargraves.nl/brit/4017.htm http://www.polishwargraves.nl/brit/4018.htm

I've used that web site many times. It might be an idea to print the list.....just in case the site goes poof.
If you run any of those words through a Polish online translator you wont get any results.

I have more Polish graves illustrated on a page dedicated to a cemetery a few miles south of me at Chevington
A number of German Airmen in there too shot down over the sea. [I've given photo's from that page to a couple of relatives of the Commonwealth dead, which makes it worthwhile]

Doesn't have the Chevington graves on that site, think it concentrates mainly on 1st Polish Armoured Division?? still very handy for me though.

I've been looking all over and I am afraid I cannot find the address for the Sikorsky Institute. They used to be great at providing information.

I'm sure in the not too distant future the powers that be in Poland will produce a Polish equivalent of the CWGC Database?
