Question ID needed....?????

Can anyone positivley identify this button..... we "think" its LYC (Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry) pre 1844.

*** If it was an "S" or an "I" as the first letter, then the flourish under the "Y" should not be there??

Here is another example:-

Compare it to the LYC Pouch badge Post 1844:-

Hi Griff,

A button like this one, went through Bosley's Button auction in Feb 2006. It was item Nos. 576.

It was described thus:

"Surrey (?) Yeomanry Cavalry Officer's plated closed back button. Firmin & Sons Strand London. GC. (Surrey Yeomanry of 1831 -48?)"

It didn't sell. The questions marks are Bosley's comments, not mine.

I am afraid that I always struggle trying to decypher the scripts/letters on these buttons.

I have had a quick look through Ripley's book on Yeomanry buttons but your button isn't shown. A similar script of "SYC" is shown but this book is also unsure whether this is really a Surrey button. (Nos. 213). In ripleys book this 'potential' Surrey Yeomanry Cavalry button shows a crown over the "SYC" script, but without the scalloped edges and the button is in gilt.

Sorry I could be more help.

Regards

Ian

Thanks Ian....... I recon it is "LYC", if it were an "I" or an "S" there would be no "flourish extension" under the "Y" as seen on the button and the LYC Pouch badge of the period. The "Flourish Extension" is indicative of the letter "L" ...... the problem with the button is that the lower part of what might be an "L" appears to end before the escaloped edge..... this might be a manufacture error.....they put the "end" of the "L" in (Flourish Extension) but forgot to meet up the lower left part of the "L", giving the appearance that it might be an "I" or an "S"?

Default SYC

I have traced the letters.
Bosley stated S.Y.C. and I agree.
If the first letter would have been an L, then its right hand side end would have curved upwards.

Hi btns

I will go with that...... now that you have illustrated it then it becomes more apparent.
