Default Pashcal Lamb & Naval Crown Button

Afternoon All,

Just a little confused by ths button. I'm not familiar with this combination: Pashcal Lamb and (what appears to be) a naval crown.

Quite a bit of wear and tear, but any help identifying it is much appreciated.

Many thanks,

P.

Thanks very much.

Would you happen to know why the naval-looking crown is part of the design? Did the Queen's have some or other maritime link, or am I showing myself up here?

Regards,

P.

Several regiments served as marines at some point in their existence I believe the WFR and East Surreys had mural crowns at some point in their lives.

Detachments of the queens (2nd foot) served aboard ships of the Royal Navy as marines during the 'glorious first of June' battles 1794. The first decisive meeting between British and French fleets, under Lord Howe. . In recognition of the part played by the regt, Army order 312 of 1909 allowed the Queens to wear a naval crown with the date 1794 on the colours.
So there you go....1661 is the date of the formation of the regt.

Steve

From: History of the Queen's Royal (West Surrey) Regiment in the Great War, pub. by Gale & Polden:

In 1909, Army Order No. 312, recognised the regiment's connection with certain naval actions of past years in the following:

"His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the following regiments being permitted, in recognition of services rendered as Marines on board vessels of the British Fleet during engagements stated, to bear upon their Colours a Naval Crown superscribed in each case with the date of action."

The passage goes on to explain that this announcement drew a letter from Captain R. Tupper, A.D.C., and the officers of HMS Excellent,

"congratulating the Regiment on having received the Honour, '1st June 1794' surmounted by a Naval Crown on the Colours"

and stating that an entry to this effect had been made in the records of HMS Excellent.
