I must say I find this thread rather cruel! Superb head dress virtually unknown and unobtainable here in the States. Simon's forage cap with that bullion badge is, well...

Fantastic headgear, etc, items of wonderful quality.
I tend not to contribute to these threads as I have no info to offer and the majority of my headgear collection is very mundane, "never mind the quality, feel the width" bottom feeder stuff. Oh, and nobody needs to offer an expensive bottle of whiskey as bait to lure me to come and maul their collection - a bottle of supermarket brand bourbon and I'm anyone's. |

Hi Leigh, Thank you for your note!!! I am still chuckling... what a marvelous sense of humor you have... love it!!!! Well then, no Port Dundas for you... we can scrape the bottom of the barrel (no pun intended), I can dig out 20-year-old Fettercairn instead!! On a more serious note, THANK YOU for taking time to look at my post and make a contribution to the thread which I hope you will consider doing more often. Thrilled you like the helmets!!! Cheers, David |

Since you are also interested in things Lancashire as they relate to The Manchester Regiment, I thought I might share this helmet I have in my collection as it has a Lancashire connection. It is a helmet to the 1st Lancashire Mounted Rifles, a unit that existed for only about a year from 1860 to 1861 with a strength of three officers and approximately 50 troopers. In 1861 they converted to light horse. Though not directly related to your collecting interest I thought you might enjoy seeing it as it is an extremely rare helmet and not seen on the market. Cheers, David |

And then left their helmets for the collectors. Nice bunch of guys they must have been.

Indeed they are/were!! And mine is one of the three officers' helmets... this unit's helmet is mentioned in the late David J. J. Rowe's book " Head Dress of the British Heavy Cavalry, Dragoon Guards, Houshold and Yeomanry Cavalry, 1842-1934" and an excellent article was published in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research, Vol. 36, No. 148 (DECEMBER 1958), titled "Helmets of the Lancashire Mounted Rifles and the 1st Lancashire Light Horse Volunteers"... it is an extremely rare helmet and certainly an exceedingly handsome helmet as well... I think... Picture of a shako plate of the Lancashire Light Horse Volunteers attached... Cheers, David |
