This is a 3rd Militia Bn SLI that I recently found. I seem to remember that it may also have been worn by a School OTC long after 1908.

Thanks Dave,
It's curious how they seem easier to obtain. I'll be happy whn I get the two other Surrey ones as it'll make a really nice set. Alan, There is a version of the badge with a completely blank scroll. Some regiments had two Militia Battalions which may explain the difference, also why my 'possible' Essex one has an erased scroll while KK show one with EGYPT. Nice lot of Militia badges, Keith.
I was just going to post a query about my KRRC badges and your album gives answers, thanks. Not sure about the collar on the right, any ideas? Cheers, Tinto |

I have one of these too and wasn't sure whether to put it in the album or not as I'm not sure if it's a militia badge or not. It may well be, being devoid of honours and I certainly have badges of this size with them. Also like the RB the KRRC never wore collars so it could well be an FSC badge athough once again Churchill notes an exception in his book. I think I'd try and get another myself and display them as a pair just in case! |

Another nice one Keith. There was an article by Parkyn about militia badges in a 1930s volume of the Jnl of the Soc for Army Res (don't have the exact ref in front of me) but there were very few cap badges included.
The only reversed metal KLR cap badges I have seen are blatant fakes but Peter (8th Foot) has a reversed metal collar badge, so you never know ..... |

Not a regiment that I collect to but I do suspect that this is an FSC cap badge not a collar and the absence of titles leads me to believe this was for wear in the FSC by the militia battalions (5th, 6th, 7th 8th & 9th battalions).
My congratulations also on the album - very impressive. John Last edited by Alan O; 21-01-10 at 05:10 PM. |

Thanks John,
We'll know the answer if there's a small badge with battle honours? Can anyone post one if they have it or have seen it? Last edited by Alan O; 21-01-10 at 05:10 PM. |

Keith,
This Regular Battalions field cap badge (with battle honours) is illustrated in K&K 673. It was sealed on 26 March 1895 as pattern no 884B (WO359 A6 page 177) Replaced by the Tudor Crown pattern successor (K&K 674) on 6 May 1902 (A/11 page 157). In this entry both the new and old badges were designated as For the Field Cap, FS Helmet and Service Headdress (this being the slouch Hat). All the above from The last edition of Crown Imperial no. 113 July 2004 the article entitled Field [Service] Cap Badges by the late, great, Maj. David Linaker. One assumes that the militia battalions had their non battle honour versions for whichever of these headdresses that they were issued with. Now to thicken the plot a bit, when I look at K&K and if I assume that the badges on any one page are to scale, the dimensions of the FSC badge compared to the forage cap badge shown at K675 makes it look to me as if the FSC is the Tudor Crown badge second from right in "Tinto's" post. BUT those badges in K&K do not have the spheres at the points of the cross John
therefore that smaller badge on the right remains a bit of a puzzle and shall need some dimensional data to close out this one. John
John, I can be such a t*t at times. Just going through my photos of my collection, looking for something else when up comes this one! The blank cross arms pattern must almost certainly Militia despite the crown difference. Not much of an attempt at making the honours legible on this one, maybe more of an attempt at showing a difference between the Regulars and Militia Battalions. Thanks to Tinto for bringing this to my attention, I'll add mine to the album. Last edited by Alan O; 21-01-10 at 05:08 PM. |
