Keith,
Sorry to take so long to reply, I've been tied up with other matters, or the end of the "bird murdering" season as Andy prefers to refer to it. The honest answer is I'm not 100% sure as to what your badges are, although I suspect that they are Officers' collars to match the later 1902 pattern OSD cap badge. The 1899 pattern cap and collar badges are as shown in photos 1 & 2 respectively for the OSD. 3 for the blues. The ORs 1899 pattern was similar, as in 4. These all changed with the 1902 sealed pattern which is as 5 & 6 (this one brooched) for the collars. As far as I have been able to tell the same Dragon was used for both the collar and cap badge, with the MIY/MY title simply added with tabs for the cap badge. I have not yet had a 1902 OSD in hand, although I know where one is, and thus cannot confirm whether this is also two piece. As such I suspect your dragons are for OSD collars, but have no idea what the letters are for as they didn't wear letters below their collars at this time, although I have photos of ORs in their scarlet tunics pre-1908 with similar shoulder titles. After that they wear the TY Montgomeryshire version. The only photo of an Officer in 1st War OSD with shoulder rank as opposed to cuff rank tunic shows him clearly wearing the 1899 pattern cap badge rather than the 1902 pattern. I'd certainly hang onto them. As to the point made by Peter in relation to HK's expertise, my earlier post was not intended to impugn his specific knowledge, rather that I cannot see that he could have been right 100% of the time with regard to those units that he did not take a special interest in. Why are there so many spurious badges to this regiment?

Frank,
because the fakers assume people will buy them! Shame! Andy |

Keith,
here's an OSD Montgomery Yeomanry Cavalry cap badge, perhaps the MYC was affixed to the dragons on further/final assembly and the adding of fittings? Although my badge appears to be of one piece construction! Best Regards Andy |

Frank,
The genuine version of this badge is quite scarce but the odd one appears now and then. The older 1902-1908 badge is more numerous and I suspect that the unit never got around to ensuring (maybe through lack of enforcement?) that the MIY scroll badge was replaced by the MY scroll variant, or they may have disposed of them when they were absorbed by the RWF in 1920. Andy is quite right in suggesting that demand for the badge may have been the attraction for the fakers. Luckily for us though, the bad ones are quite easy to spot. Regards, Garry |
