Hello
Has anyone got an example of the 5th battalion Devonshire Regiment white metal cap badge to show me please? Also, did the officers have a silver/silver plate of this badge please? Thank you for your time Chris |

Sorry Paul, I meant the Territorial 5thBn, same as Bi metal Devons but all WM, sorry, should have been more clearer, thank you for your reply anyway.

Cheers Paul,
I assume the badge with the broach fitting is 5th Territorial BN? KK says 5th wore an all wm badge. The reason for me asking is, I recently saw a friend of my Uncles collection of Devon's badges, infantry yeomanry etc, annoyingly we didn't have a lot of time there, the last badges he showed, he said came from a family member who wore them, there was a T/5/DEVON shoulder title, and an all white metal devon regiment cap badge, the castle part was unvoided around it, and it was on a slider, im annoyed as I didn't get a photo of it. Has anyone seen an example of this unvoided wm devons badge? Chris |

Single metal badges are the hardest to authenticate in many cases but as noted the fact it matches the dies of similar badges (see link) suggest that it is likely to be correct.
I don't have a copy of their dress regulations but I suspect that the w/m badge was worn on their Green walking out hats from 1908-15 whilst they wore the bi-metal badge on khaki. The TF were issued the bi-metal badge (or economy 1916 all brass) from 1916 onwards. Alan Last edited by Alan O; 09-01-20 at 09:48 AM. |

The badge I looked at in this chaps collection wasn't voided round the castle, he said it was worn by a family member I'll try and get my Uncle to get a photo of it front and back and go from there Cheers all Chris |

I would be interested to see such a badge with provenance.
Whilst unusual in that it is all WM and unvoided this one has the flaws and a reverse + slider stereotypical of the commonly seen eBay repros. Not a badge I would buy. |

I managed to get round my Uncles friend.
He claims this badge was worn by his great Uncle who was in the 5th BN. It's on a JR Gaunt London slider. Don't know, looks ok. Chris |

15mm J.R.Gaunt.London mark from the 1970s fake flood. The WM badge is the same as the one I showed above which is certainly a repro.

Don't know why he's so adamant his G Uncle wore it?? I did ask are you sure, he just said my dad said he did. Do you think it's a good idea to show him this thread? He's got some really nice Devon's badges, look good to me IMHO. Don't know why his insistence on this one? Cheers all Chris |

I have no specialist knowledge of the Devons or their badges but it could well be your Great Uncle wore a WM badge which was lost and then replaced in or after the 1970s by this badge as a representation.
I’ve read the 3rd Bn Beds wore a WM badge at Gallipoli during WW1. So depending on when he served its plausible a WM badge may have been worn. His father being the origin of the badge’s story makes it a secondary source rather than a primary. As such easy for some ambiguity/assumption to creep in i.e. G Uncle said this was his badge that he actually wore in service v’s this was G Uncle’s badge that I found his his possession/saw him wear at reunions etc. and he told me his Bn wore WM badges. The latter is putting 2 + 2 together and coming up with 5 potentially if G Uncle forgot to mention it’s a replacement or the question was never asked and it was just assumed to be his service badge. Naturally in the telling of the story to the next generation this can easily become a simple statement of fact - ‘this was his badge’ (which it was) but misses out the important nuance of how/when it came into G Uncle’s possession. Also I’m sure most of us would wholeheartedly believe our dad’s especially on family history. Last edited by Luke H; 11-02-20 at 03:36 PM. |
