Default More Parachutte cloth wings Subdued & Coloured

Here are 3 more wings

1/Subdued embroidered on cotton drill:

When were these issued and replaced?

2/Machine embroidered on felt light blue wings (longer) adhesive backing.

Date of issue and is this style still issued?

3/embroidered on felt blue wings khaki cloth backed.

These look older maybe 60's-70's?

cheers team

Phill

Hi Team

Any comments are these all original modern era wings from 1970's-2000 period?

Just need confirmation.

cheers

The middle wings are 1970s issue and the subdued wings are 1980s private purchase but often worn. The last set of coloured wings may be 1960s or earlier but I’m not sure.

The backing cloth on the third pair is much coarser than anything I have in my collection RM or army that its similar but I only collect from the 1980s onwards.

Default 1960s Para Wings

Hi Phill,

The middle wings are consistent with the modern design introduced in mid 1963. I believe the ordnance issued wings were embroidered with napped cotton in the 1960s but replaced gradually with blended thread later on, particularly in the 1970s and after. It seems to be the case in your example where the thread appears finer than with the 100% cotton example. The cotton backing to the rear is very similar but not identical.

I have added two examples of 1960s wings for reference.
Wings 1963 pattern Front.jpgWings 1963 pattern Rear.jpg

Modern Wing.jpg
The last one is sewn on a second type wartime Denison smock converted to a full length zip and likely issued in the 1960s.

Needless to say that this particular pattern continued to be produced and worn well beyond the 1990s maybe with slight variations (larger basket perhaps).

As for the last set of wings, the design is clearly pre-1963 but it doesn’t mean they can be dated from that time. Lots of private purchase old design wings continued to be worn after the 1960s.

Hope this helps.
