Default 49th Hastings Rifles Cap badge for opinions

Dwayne's thread on the Hastings & prince Edward Reg't Cap badge got my mind working on the badge that I will illustrate with this post.

The HPE Regt was an almalgamation of the 49th Hastings Rifles & the 16th Prince Edward(county) Regt, after WWI.

The 'new' HPE Reg't badge was largely taken from the former 49th Hastings Rifles badge as will be seen by comparing the two badges.

I have illustrated below the 49th Hastings Rifles cap badge. This example is in silver & came with the officer's medals & other badges I mentioned in my previous thread on the 39th Bn CEF cap badge.

I think this is quite a rare badge, but I wanted to get some opinions on it from Canadian Militia/CEF collectors that likely know considerably more than I do about these badges.

Obv & Rev shots are attached (hopefully)

& thanks in advance for opinions,

Bryan

Hi Bryan, I can't comment on how rare the badge might be. You need a specialist for that particular regiment to comment on that.

What I find interesting is the repair made to the crown. Mazeas shows your badge with and without a crown. Could you badge be the hat badge and the badge without the crown a collar badge? - I wonder.

The time frame for your badge is around the time that Queen Victoria dies and with some militia regiments that only just recieved their badges, the cost of making them all over again with the correct crown was too great. As a result, the manufacturers had the Victorian crowns removed and Edwardian crown soldered in their place. This could be the case with your badge, even though Mazeas does not show a Victorian crown badge but that doesn't mean that one didn't exist and Mazeas didn't have one.

Cheers,

Greg

Default 49 HR Cap badge - Mazeas

Thanks for yr response Greg. Yes I have a photocopy of the 49th HR page for Mazeas & have att'd it below. Altho I dont collect pre WWI CM badges so I am not knowledgable about them.

I have no idea when the crown was added but it has certainly been added. I know the cap badge existed without a crown (altho I have never had one) as shown in the Mazeas illustration below, & he gives the yr as 1910, & then the illustration with the KC above, also as 1910.

The officer whom the badge belonged to entered the HR in 1901, & served in WWI becoming the last Col of the HR in '19 & the first Col of the combined HR & 16th Prince Edward Regt - they formed the HPE Regt in '20. I am assuming he wore this badge prior to the amalgamation.
This badge was not a collar badge - the collar badge is llustrated in Mazeas below & I have those as well.

I also have the 49th Victorian crown Bugle badge as shown in Mazea illustration as well as the 49th Pouch badge, & will post photos of those.

Presumably, since the Bugle badges have Victorian crowns, the pre 1901 Cap badge of Victorian time also had a Victorian crown as you say. I have never seen one tho & I expect they are rare.
