Default Brass & Aluminium Tripod, Military Or Other Use?

I bought this a few days ago, thinking of using it as a stand to support a vehicle lamp adapted as a table lamp, without drilling, sawing or otherwise messing around either component.
Out of interest, does any body know what kind of implement this would have supported please?
It's made of brass, the leg extensions of aluminium, no paint, no markings so I'm assuming it's not military.
It does have a few nicks cut into it as if somebody's marked it for a particular setting, or maybe just to mark it for identification.
It's 48 cm tall with legs extended.
Somebody loved it enough to make two new feet / clamps for it.
