Essex Regiment - Original?
I would welcome the opinions of the forum please.
Is this Essex Regiment badge with the metals reversed, white metal wreath and castle brass Sphinx and motto, an original or fake please? Thank you for looking, Keith

I don’t like the back, to uniform colour, and the edge is burred round, from the front the wreath is not that nice looking either. So I am going to say a copy, based only on my gut feeling

John Gaylor describes this as 3rd (Militia)Battalion. up to 1908.

The badge post #1 was made 1970s or later.

From the photographs I would say it cannot be original.

Ya, I can't see a proper badge manufacturer having to cut away the plinth of the sphinx to make space for the castle's turret.

Its a fake. The central tower intrudes into the plinth. Plenty of this type on ebay sold as original.

I have always understood that if the castle intruded into the plinth that it was a fake, as Terry Rayner posts. Is this not the case?

Greetings each.
As has been posted on this site on more than one occasion, this particular pattern of an Essex badge is a complete and utter fake; the points made earlier, indicating this are correct. I have seen this particular die used to make the following: "Normal" Issue; brass economy; 4th-7th Battalions; 8th Battalion and the item subject of this thread. Unfortunately, I have seen 2 or 3 of these on respected dealers sites in the recent past being offered as genuine....................which they most certainly ain't. Regards. Brian. Brian |

Keith.
Further to my last post; the badge you are looking for is a very scarce beast, in fact I would go as far as to say that it is a harder to find item than some of your LRDG badges. I have seen no more than 10 genuine examples, as far as I remember. It has not been clarified yet as to who wore them, but the general consensus is that in all probability it was the Militia. Regards. Brian. |
