Default Acid Test ?

I have acquired a US officers cap badge and I thought it had a makers name on a plate on the back but in closer inspection it says “Acid Test”.

Now I know what the general meaning of that phrase is but why is it on the back of this badge.

Thanks in advance.

Peter

Found a couple of bits of info on an American site :

Quote:
According to a 1930 Meyer catalog:

"ACID TEST insignia and buttons are made on a Meyer Metal base with three seperate solid gold platings that will stand the acid test...".
and

Quote:
Army Reg 600-35, dated 25 November 1924, directed that all bronze insignia be removed from all uniforms. This regulation diected that only gilt and silver insignia would be worn, including a smaller version for the olive-drab shirt.
So it is possible/probable that the "acid test" stamp was used to show that badges were actually gilt/plated.
