I finally also found an original ww2 maple leaf badge as worn by Dutch volunteers of the Royal Netherlands Brigade Prinses Irene that were recruited from Canada. Worn on left arm below the Dutch lion nationality patch. Members of no 2 Dutch troop no 10 commando wore it on right arm below shoulder title.

Belgians seen wearing the maple leaf on the left arm as well (if the photo is not in reverse) in 1941 in Wales.

I believe the colours were different from Dutch - purple I think?
