the badge seems to be darkened, either blackened or an OSD, but the cap and the coat say other ranks, but he has a cane, which might make a difference

The cane may well be because he was wounded in the leg as he does not look to be an officer to me.

More likely to be a cyclist or a dark 1916 economy. Looking at the buttons colour, it does like the cap badge is blackened so a Cyclist.

Alan, the badge is definitely darker/blackened, and as you say probably an OR so a 7th welsh cyclist, probably recovering from a wound.
