Default VERY EXPENSIVE NEWCASTLE OTC

I bought this badge about 35 years ago for around £3-5 and never thought much about it. I have just seen Noonans Auctioneers have sold one for £340 plus commission (Estimate £250 - £300) and another version to South Staffordshire badge for similar price! What makes this worth that price?
Interested to hear your comments. Denis

It was small OTC but was in existence up to WW2 and was wearing the PoW plume version then. One of the harder ones to find and both versions remain on my wants list.

Even Bosleys auctions were a fraction of the price so clearly 2 people wanted it badly at Bonhams.

The South Stafford badge was the only one I have ever seen. No! I did not bid.

I have been looking for years not found one locally but do have a pair of shoulder titles see lower right one seen here.
I have seen the South Staffs version in the Regimental museum, but never handled either types.

Stephen

Default NEWCASTLE OTC

Many thanks for all your interesting replies. As this badge is not in my particular field of interest it seems selfish to hold on to it so I would be happy to swap it for a pre 1946 or WW1 or earlier (even better), officers silver/gilt badge or collars that appealed if anyone should be interested.
